Kasyapa Buddha preceded Shakyamuni Buddha, the buddha we know as the “historical buddha”. Kasyapa Buddha was the third of the 1,000 buddhas of this Fortunate Aeon who are predicted to descend to the earth and teach here. The first two buddhas of this aeon were Krakuchand Buddha and Kanakamuni Buddha.
Kasyapa Buddha was born into the Brahmin caste in India. He became enlightened under a tree at Bodhgaya in India, just like Shakyamuni Buddha. All of the buddhas of this Fortunate Aeon are predicted to become enlightened at Bodhgaya, which is why it is such a sacred place of pilgrimage.
Kasyapa Buddha gave this teaching:
“Not to commit any evil actions
To accumulate a wealth of excellent virtue
And to subdue one’s own mind –
This is the teaching of the Buddha.”
